LUXeXceL has a technology platform to rapidly produce (3D print) plastic optics. LUXeXceL develops, manufactures and sells optical solutions, created by a novel and patented digital printing, optical and lighting technology. This is a fundamental innovation in the Additive Manufacturing of optics.
LUXeXceL has invented the Printoptical© Technology, a revolutionary and globally unique digital additive manufacturing process to create optical components like, micro structures, freeform lenses, arrays, prisms, fresnel’s or other complex decorative designed (optical) surfaces. This innovative and patented “One-Step-Cad-to-Optic” process allows LUXeXceL to offer optical designers around the globe a new and unique 3D printing service.
LUXeXceL is currently focused on the global lighting industry with on demand functional prototyping and the manufacturing of illumination optics. With additive manufacturing they enable new design options and even new optical functions to customise the light distribution of any application, project or even single product or lens. Being able to 3D print optically smooth objects makes the technology suitable to many other applications beyond lighting such as eyewear.
LUXeXceL was founded in October 2009 by Richard van de Vrie and Kurt Blessing. Coming from the general lighting and LED lighting industry Richard Van De Vrie was acutely aware of the differences in the production of LED lighting fixtures compared to conventional lighting fixtures. In conventional lighting the design takes place over at least one year and the fixture is expected to stay in production for over a decade which allows for the development costs to be amortised over a long period. In LED manufacture the die sets used improve and change every 6-12 months and each new die requires different fixtures and optics. When making these new fixtures Richard Van De Vrie discovered that the optic development often took a considerable length of time and large amounts of capital to produce. So he set out to find a way to reduce this cost and increase the optics flexibility.
The company is generating small amounts of revenue and enjoys quite some attention from the industry.
