Rafael initiated the founding of SET Ventures in 2007 and joined SET as a Senior Investment Manager in January 2016. His responsibilities are originating and executing investments and serving on the Boards of portfolio companies.
Between 2008 and 2015 Rafael led the Participations & Corporate Venturing unit of RWE/Essent. During this role Rafael held board positions at 10 companies and funds with a total aggregated turnover of €1 billion in the BeNeLux region. The activities of these companies varied from gas and coal fired assets to wind, nuclear, gas field exploration, heat network assets and LNG storage.
In 2006, Rafael founded the Essent Corporate Venturing unit and proceeded to lead this unit committing €45 million in (mainly) VC funds, with some direct investments in sustainable energy technology companies. As part of this role he initiated the founding of SET Fund I in 2007 and represented the cornerstone LP in SET Fund I and II until 2015.
Prior to founding the corporate venturing unit Rafael worked in the Essent M&A division and was responsible for the sale of Kabelcom (@home) to PE buyers for €2.6 billion. This followed 5 years of senior positions in corporate Strategy and M&A for KPN and Heijmans. During his work at KPN Rafael invested in and later exited several smaller internet service providers and technology companies, he was also responsible for the sale of Pannon Hungary, a mobile operator. During his time in M&A Rafael successfully led the execution and closing of over 30 deals as a senior professional in corporate M&A.
Rafael started his career in Investment Banking for Paribas, at first as an Associate in Corporate Finance and later as an Investment Manager for Private Equity, where he invested in 2 very successful internet technology companies: Bibit and InterXion.
After leaving RWE Rafael has been active as CEO of a medical technology spin-out from the Amsterdam Academic Hospital VUmc’s brain research department. He has also been active as independent consultant and initiated and co-founded a smart home start up during 2015.
Rafael holds a master degree in Business Administration from the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM), The Netherlands.
